Description of Garment Construction Techniques.

1. Pattern Making
This is the process of creating paper or cardboard templates for each part of a garment (bodice, sleeve, collar, etc.). Patterns guide accurate cutting and ensure correct fit and proportion.
2. Fabric Cutting
Fabric is laid out and cut according to the pattern pieces. Care is taken to follow the grain line to prevent twisting or distortion of the garment after sewing.
3. Seaming
Seams join two or more pieces of fabric together. Common seams include:
Plain seam
French seam
Flat-felled seam
Seaming gives shape and structure to the garment.
4. Dart Construction
Darts are stitched folds used to shape fabric around body curves such as the bust, waist, or hips. They improve fit and appearance.
5. Pleats and Gathers
These techniques control fullness:
Pleats are folded and stitched to add style and shape.
Gathers are small, soft folds made by drawing fabric together.
6. Hemming
Hemming finishes the lower edge of garments like skirts, trousers, and sleeves. It prevents fraying and gives a neat, professional look.
7. Facings
Facings are pieces of fabric attached to raw edges (necklines, armholes) to provide a clean finish and support without visible stitching on the outside.
8. Interfacing
Interfacing is a supportive material added to areas like collars, cuffs, and waistbands. It strengthens and maintains the garment’s shape.
9. Fastenings
These allow garments to be worn and removed easily. Examples include:
Buttons and buttonholes
Zippers
Hooks and eyes
Velcro
10. Decorative Techniques
These add beauty and uniqueness to garments, such as:
Embroidery
Appliqué
Topstitching
Beading
11. Finishing Techniques
Final processes that improve durability and appearance, including:
Pressing/ironing
Trimming loose threads
Edge finishing (overlocking, zigzag stitching)
